About
Hi, my name is Susan but most of my friends and family call me Suzie. Welcome to my new site. I hope you are here because you share my passion for walking and hiking. Alternatively, I hope my enthusiasm for the outdoors can rub off on you a little bit!
I have enjoyed walking and hiking for almost as long as I can remember. When I was younger, going out walking with my dad used to be my favourite way to spend the weekends and now I hope that my children can enjoy walking as much with me. I have so many happy memories of wonderful walks and I want them to get the same enjoyment out of our trips together.
When I used to go out walking with my father, he would show us how to navigate using all of nature’s clues. Little things like looking at where the moss was growing on the trees would help us to work out where we were. My brother and I would find it fascinating that there were so many different tricks to try which didn’t need any fancy equipment. To me, it was all about being one with nature.
One of the main things that I love about walking and hiking is getting to spend time in the outdoors. I never fail to feel amazed by the beautiful British countryside. Being around nature is truly wonderful to me, especially as someone who lives in the middle of a city. I always feel joy when we start heading out of the city towards whichever patch of countryside we have chosen. That being said, I will always feel a soft spot for the Yorkshire Dales where I first cut my teeth. On the other hand, there are some fantastic walks to enjoy around our biggest cities, so there is no need to worry if you cannot get out to the more remote locations.
My two children are aged 10 and 13. When we go out walking and hiking together we share out the tasks so that they get to play a part in “choosing their own adventure”. Teaching my kids how to choose a route, read a map and use a compass means that they feel really included whenever we go out hiking. I also hope that this helps to instil a sense of responsibility in them, which can be carried over into their day to day lives. That being said, my youngest child’s favourite part of any walk is getting to make their own trail mix to be enjoyed along the way.
As a family we love to walk in England, Scotland and Wales, but we have also been on hiking holidays in Europe and North America. When the children get a little older, we hope to be able to take walking and hiking trips in even more adventurous locations.
In this site you will find lots of information about the places that I like to visit and some of my favourite new walks. I also hope to be able to talk to you about some of my favourite pieces of kit. There are a few items that I never set off without and I hope to be able to share this information with all of my visitors, so that you can enjoy them too. I may even get around to sharing some of my children’s favourite trail mix recipes.
I hope that you enjoy reading my new site as much as I have enjoyed writing it. For now, I am taking a step away from the computer to spend some precious time in the great outdoors!
