The main walking for health scheme is called Take A Step and we also promote the Primary Care Trust leaflets on independent walking which is called A Step in the Right Direction. The walks cover three levels in different terrains, either on the seafront, by the river Adur or out on the hills which includes the South Downs. Some walks start from libraries and surgeries. The libraries encourage membership and offer tea/coffee.
On October 12th 2009 we ran a special walk for the year five children of Sompting Primary School to suit their topic on mountaineering. They climbed their nearest 'mountain' which was 149m and this was scaled up to compare to Everest. They wore pedometers throughout the walk to convert the number of step to do Everest. They had a great time and their energy level was keen and maintained all the way to the trig point. Their mountaineering mascot dog Charlie came along too. He has climbed Ben Nevis. Snowdon, Old Man of Coniston and the recently classified mountain in Wales know as Mynnyed Graig Goch.
