Welcome to Newham Striders - A mainly urban walking scheme offering 7 walks per week for the general public plus 4 walks per week for adults with learning difficulties. The walks take place in and around the London borough of Newham, with the majority taking place in local parks with tarmac paths, the local dock area, Beckton District Park and Wanstead Flats. The Saturday walk is for the more experienced walker or one that would like to progress to a longer more challenging walk.

Please phone the coordinator (see right-hand column) to find out more, as the locations alter from week to week on two of the walks.

Our walks

All of our walks are led by trained experienced walk leaders who carry a first aid kit.

The walks are open to all individuals aged 16 years and over. An adult must accompany individuals under 16. The walks take place in and around the London borough of Newham, with the majority taking place in local parks with tarmac paths, the local dock area, Beckton District Park and Wanstead Flats. The Saturday walk is for the more experienced walker or one that would like to progress to a longer more challenging walk.

It is recommended that - when attending one of our walks - you wear comfortable warm clothing, comfortable shoes and bring water with you, particularly during the summer months. Don't forget your umbrella if it looks like it is going to rain. It is recommended that those attending the Saturday walk wear waterproof shoes.

Walkers are invited to join and attend any walk. Walks take place at various locations around Newham. Please phone the coordinator on the number below to find out more, as the locations alter from week to week on two of the walks.

The recommended amount of exercise that adults are advised to do each week is: 5 x 30 minutes or 3 x 60 minutes moderate physical activity per week. Brisk walking is considered a moderate activity

Please seek medical advice if you think that you have a condition that may be aggravated by exercise or you have not exercised for a long time. If you have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and live in Newham, please phone 020 7363 8416 for information on exercise specifically for those with COPD.

Our current weekly walks are:

Walks (1 & 2) Monday - Thursday Central Park, East Ham. E6. Walks Starts at 2.00pm. Meet at the war memorial, Bus Terminal entrance.
This is a circular walk on tarmac around the circumference of the park. This park is flat and suitable for wheelchairs. Various distances can be carried out ranging from half a mile up to One mile per lap. During the summer, there is a cafe within the park, which we use for refreshments, after the walk. During the winter, a cafe just outside the park gates is used for refreshments. Toilets are also available. These two walks are lead by the Newham Striders coordinator.

Walk (3) Wednesday starts at 1.00pm. Meet at Kier Hardy Methodist Church, Fife Rd, Canning town. E16 (opposite Kier Hardy Primary school).
This is a linear walk, around various locations in and around Newham. The duration of the walks are up to One & half Hours to Two Hours. Refreshments are taken at the end of each walk. Toilets are always included within this walk. This walk is suitable for wheelchairs. This walk may involve some bus or train travel. If you have a travel pass, bring it with you. This walk is led the Newham Striders walks coordinator. Please phone 07950 186 137 prior to attending this walk for the first time,

Walks (4 & 5) Tuesday & Thursday, Wanstead Flats E7. Walk Starts at 1.30pm. Meet on the Flats, corner of Capel Rd. (Forest Gate end)
This is a circular walk around the Flats on the gravel and grass path. Various distances can be walked, ranging from Half mile up to Three Miles, according to your ability. This walk is not suitable for wheelchairs. It is recommended that you wear waterproof shoes on this walk during wet weather. Toilets are available, approximately half way around the full course. Unfortunately, no refreshments are available. A Diabetes Specialist Nurse who is also an experienced walk leader, plus one other experienced walk leader leads this walk.

Walk (6) Friday starts at 10.30am. Meet at Ascension Church, Baxter rd, Custom House. E16.
This varies between circular and linier, around various locations in and around Newham. The duration of the walks are up to One & half Hours to Two Hours. Refreshments are taken during the walk and the walk resumed. Thus, you may be out for three hours. Toilets are always included within this walk. All walks are tarmac paths. This walk may involve some bus or train travel. If you have a travel pass, bring it with you. This walk is led by the Newham Striders coordinator. Walk (7) Saturday - Wanstead Park. Walk starts at 9.00am. (Sharp) Meet at St Mary's Church, St Mary's Avenue, Wanstead. E12.
This walk is for the more experienced regular walker. The walk last for Two & Half hours. These walks take place on parkland and grass, so you are advised to wear waterproof shoes. This walk is led by three experienced walk leaders. Please phone 07908744555 prior to attending the walk for the frst time.

All of these walks are completely free of charge, unless there is a need to use public transport to or from the various locations and you do not have a free travel pass.

Please arrive ten minutes early to register.

In addition to the above walks there is also a monthly ramble held on the first Saturday of the month January to November. There is a small charge for the ramble. See below for more details

Newham Council provide a monthly Ramble for eleven months of the year.During the summer, the group travel by coach to the walk area. The walks are approximately SIX/SEVEN miles in length. Summer walks usually involve climbing over styles walking over ploughed fields and sometimes up hills. Events

Walk London
Walk London co-ordinates investment from Transport for London in the 6 routes that make up London’s Strategic Walk Network of 56 sections covering 350 miles. All walks start from public transport points. The six routes comprise the Jubilee Walkway, the Lea Valley Walk, Thames Path National Trail, South East Green Chain Walk, Capital Ring (the inner orbital of 15 sections covering 75 miles, designed to be within 10 miles of Charing Cross) and London LOOP (the outer orbital that encircles London – 24 sections covering 150 miles). In Newham there is the Lea Valley Walk and Capital Ring section 14-15. Walk London organizes over 40 walks on each of three free led walking weekends a year on the last weekend in January, May and September.
