Barking and Dagenham: Just Walk - London

Last updated 05 August 2008

Our walks

New Health walks have been set up by Barking and Dagenham's Sport Development Unit alongside 'Walking for Health' and in partnership with the Primary Care Trust to provide opportunities for the community to improve their health and fitness, as well as make friends.

All walks are at the walker's own pace, with two trained leaders - one at the front, and one at the back so that nobody is left behind. The walks are a great way of making new friends and keeping fit and healthy.

At the moment, six regular walks are in place.

WALK 1 - Tuesdays meet 12.30 at the Civic Centre in Dagenham. The walk is a circular route starting and finishing at the Civic Centre. The distance is 1.7 miles around Central Park and walkers of all abilities attend.

WALK 2 " Wednesdays meet 10.30am at Gates on corner Gale Street / Ivyhouse Road. The walk is a circular route starting and finishing at the Gale street / Ivyhouse Road gates. The distance is 1.7miles around Parsloes Park. Open to all ages and abilities.

WALK 3 - Thursdays meet 10 am at the Roundhouse Pub park entrance. Again this is a circular walk around Mayesbrook park, which has lakes and lovely views of wildlife. The walk is 2.1 miles. Open to all ages and abilities.

WALK 4 " Fridays meet 10am at the Millennium centre, Dagenham Road. The walk starts and finishes at the Millennium centre allthough the route varies every week.

WALK 5 - Saturdays 11 am Barking park, Lodge entrance. The walk is a circular route starting and finishing at the Lodge entrance. The distance is 2 & ¼ miles. Open to all ages and abilities.

All of these walks are on pathways, and therefore fully accessible for wheelchairs and prams except for Fridays at Millenium Centre.

Regular physical activity such as walking can help to reduce heart problems, stress and high blood pressure, as well as making you feel good and sleep better. It's also a great way of socialising and making new friends.

Our aim is to provide more walks around the borough. However, we need more volunteer walk leaders. If you are interested in training as a volunteer walk leader, please contact the Just Walk Co-ordinator
