Natural England’s Walking the way to Health encourages you to enjoy your local natural spaces and benefit your health by taking part in health walks. We’re the largest national body promoting and setting the standards for led health walks.
Find more information about what Natural England does.

WHI aims to encourage people, particularly those who take little exercise, to do regular short walks in their communities. We support over 525 local health walk schemes – find your nearest using our Walk Finder.

BBC Devon features the story of teacher Jill Todd who had to take a break from the classroom after being involved in a car crash. Wanting to keep busy, she visited her local volunteer centre and, among other things, helped to set up the Totnes Walk and Talk scheme.

Health walks are made available to the public in many different ways ranging from small volunteer-led schemes to large-scale initiatives. However, in the West Midlands, a different approach has been adopted.

WHI Learning Network 
The WHI Learning Network is for volunteers and professionals who are already involved in health walks. On the Network you can:

  • share good practice;
  • air problems or views;
  • learn more about walking for health and the various strategies which influence the initiative; and
  • communicate with other members working in this field.

You will need to register to become a member of the Learning Network.
